Putnam River Trail

Originally built in 1998, as part of the East Coast Greenway, the 1.8-mile Putnam River Trail began at the Arch Street footbridge and wound its way north on the eastern shore of the Quinebaug River ending on Providence Street at Miller Park.  There are several points of access which include a total of 5 parking areas along Kennedy Drive. The trail was expanded twice first in 2009 adding an additional 2,640 feet linking the Arch Street foot bridge south to the Putnam Riverview Marketplace; then in 2016 adding an additional 1,950 feet from the Putnam Riverview Marketplace south toward the Hale YMCA Youth and Family Center.

There are 5 bridges adjacent to the trail including a 200 - foot pedestrian bridge built on the stone foundation of an old railroad trestle.  This foot bridge has been identified as the future entrance for Putnam’s connection to the Airline Trial.  Each bridge offers scenic views of the Quinebaug River.  The trail consists of asphalt which is good for walking, biking and easy handicap access.
