Renters Rebate

Program Description

State law provides a reimbursement program for Connecticut renters who are elderly or totally disabled, and whose incomes do not exceed certain limits. Persons renting an apartment or room or living in cooperative housing or a mobile home may be eligible for this program. Renters' rebates can be up to $900 for married couples and $700 for single persons. The renters' rebate amount is based on a graduated income scale and the amount of rent and utility payments (excluding telephone) made in the calendar year prior to the year in which the renter applies. Application may be made with the Assessor's Office, between April 1st and October 1st.


Eligible renters are either over 65 or over 18 AND receiving Social Security Disability benefits. Must also meet a one year state residency requirement.

Typical required documentation is as follows:

INCOME:

  • If a tax return was filed for 2020, a copy is required in order to process the application
  • If receiving Social Security Benefits, a copy of your 1099 stating total benefits paid out in 2020. If you do not have this, you may request a form TPQY from SSA by calling the following # 1-800-772-1213 or by requesting online at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount
  • Any other income received during the year including but not limited to: IRA distributions, Pensions, Wages, Dividends, Interest; WE NEED TOTAL PAID IN 2020

EXPENSES:

  • Total Rent paid in 2020 (either all 12 months rent receipts or letter from landlord stating total paid in 2020)
  • Total Utility expense paid in 2020. Utilities considered are for electricity and heat. Either proof of total paid via monthly statements or a letter from your provider showing total amount paid in the year
