Renters Rebate
State law provides a reimbursement program for Connecticut renters who are elderly or totally disabled, and whose incomes do not exceed certain limits. Persons renting an apartment or room or living in cooperative housing or a mobile home may be eligible for this program. The rebate amount is based on a graduated income scale and the amount of rent and utility payments made in the calendar year prior to the year in which the renter applies. Applications can be accepted in the Assessor's Office between April 1st and September 30th.
To apply, you must provide proof of all income from 2025, including:
o 1099-SSA (reports how much Social Security was received in 2025)
o Tax return if one is filed
o Documentation of any other income received whether taxable or not.
§ Wages, alimony, interest income, VA pension and/or disability payments, retirement income, lottery winnings, etc.
You must also provide proof of rent and utilities paid in 2025.
o Proof of rent can include rent receipts, a letter from the owner of the property, or cancelled checks.
o Proof of electricity and/or gas should be in the form of an annual statement from Eversource showing amount paid and date.
§ Do not include cable or phone bills.
