Staples, Inc. launched the office supplies superstore industry
with the opening of its first store in Brighton (Boston), Mass.,
in May 1986. Its goal: to provide small business owners the same
low prices on office supplies previously enjoyed only by large corporations.
Staples is now an $11 billion retailer of office supplies, business
services, furniture and technology to consumers and businesses from
home-based businesses to Fortune 500 companies in North America
and throughout Europe. Customers can shop with Staples however they
choose, either by walking in, calling in or logging on, demonstrating

Superstores
Worldwide, Staples has more than 1,400 office superstores, operating
as Staples in the United States and United Kingdom; Business Depot,
Staples Business Depot and Bureau en Gros in Canada; Staples Der
Buro-Megamarkt in Germany; and Office Centre in the Netherlands
and Portugal. Typically located in suburban malls and high-traffic
urban sites, Staples superstores offer every day low prices on more
than 7,500 office supply items, including business machines, computers
and peripherals, furniture and communications equipment, including
telephone and pager services.
The typical Staples superstore is about 20,000 square feet and
targets small businesses, home office professionals and consumers.
The stores offer a Copy Center that provides on-site copying, printing
and binding services, and U.S. stores also feature a Business Technology
Center where customers can obtain computer upgrades, software installations
and consultations by specially trained staff.
All Staples U.S. superstores have build-to-order computer capabilities
and offer expansive business services such as payroll and Web services
to small business customers. All U.S. superstores also have Internet
Access Points to Staples.com, expanding available offerings to 45,000
products and dozens of business services. In select locations, Staples
operates its superstores 24 hours a day. In densely populated urban
areas such as Manhattan and San Francisco, Staples operates smaller
store formats, called Staples Express. The company opened the industry's
first airport location in Philadelphia in 1999 and operates airport
stores in Boston, Newark and Pittsburgh.
